July 2008 - How young do you feel?
Recently a member of a list I'm a part of posted an interesting comment about looking too young and possibly not be taken seriously by her clients. Usually this is not something that causes most of us concern. Our thoughts tend to go to how can we look younger. So what can we also do to look younger than we physically are? Here are a few thoughts inspired by other members' posts.
- "Walk your talk" - the person concerned has been working as a complementary therapist for many years and "walks her talk". She incorporates the tools she offers to her clients to produce a healthly routine in her life that has kept her looking so young. We all have the opportunity of passing on knowledge and experience to others and it is even more effective if we have experienced it ourselves.
- Living in the moment - by that I don't mean not thinking about the future but enjoying the moment for what it is. On a nutritional level it equates to eating consciously with the knowledge of our body type and the flavours of food. It's also about being aware and thankful for what we have to eat and how it got there.
- Going with the flow - this is similar to point 2 but on a nutritional level it involves, for example, following the rhythm of nature: the seasons for the produce we eat as far as possible, buying local and organic - the natural state of produce! For sleep patterns it means going to bed between 10-11pm to be horizontal so that the liver can do its cleansing work. As a general rule it's better to go to bed and wake up earlier.
- Taking responsibility for our wellbeing - this means taking action and/or getting help to take action. This was one of my main reasons for studying nutrition - to help myself. While you may not want to go and study like I did there are many ways you can take responsibility, for example, by getting individual coaching, attending cooking classes or buying cooking books.
- Savouring life - and everything it serves up to us. It's important to enjoy all that it has to offer and to create a supportive environment. This support will help us to digest on all levels so much more easily even when a situation or food is not necessarily what we thought we wanted.
- Having faith in who we are, what we do and have to offer - if we don't how can we expect anyone else too. On nutritional and other levels, this means going with what resonates with you. For example, I've taken the decision to be vegetarian because it feels right for me. I don't expect my clients to automatically make the same choice but I offer support if they feel it is right for them.
- Being radiant - my sister once gave me a quote which I thought was by Nelson Mandela but have since discovered it was part of a letter sent by Marianne Williamson to Oprah Winfrey. It's about how so many of us are afraid to let our "light", our talents shine. But this is the only way we can help others do the same.
